One of the greatest black athletes of all time may also be one of the least well known. Josh Gibson was a negro league baseball legend that most people consider the greatest negro league baseball player of all time. In fact, some people consider him the black Babe Ruth for his legendary power. Still others that saw him play, like to say that Babe Ruth was the white Josh Gibson. That's how good he really was.
Josh Gibson is still the only man to ever hit a ball completely out of Yankee stadium, and he actually hit over 800 homeruns in his career, which would make him the homerun king if he played at a later time when segregation was not so thick in America.
Josh Gibson died during his late thirties at such a young age, but his impact on the world of sports is legendary to the likes of Babe Ruth. Josh Gibson really was a precursor to Jackie Robinson, but if it werent for great players like Josh Gibson, Jackie Robinson may not have been able to break into major league baseball at all.
